Juan van der Hamen
Portrait of the 1st Marquis of Leganés, Diego Mexía Felípez de Guzmán

The Marquis was a Spanish politician and army commander, named Governor of the Duchy of Milan. He was also one of the greatest art collectors of his time. The Marquis of Leganés, Rubens said, “…is one of the greatest connoisseurs of this age”. Rubens’ judgment was confirmed resoundingly when the nobleman died in 1655; the inventory made then of his property showed that his painting collection numbered some 1333 pictures.
